How long a remodel takes

If you’re asking how long a kitchen remodel takes or how long a bathroom remodel takes, Angi, HomeGuide, and Fixr publish timelines for those projects and additions. The City of Austin provides review times as of October 2026. Design, ordering materials, and permit review come before the construction weeks, and we lay out the schedule for your job in the written estimate.

Kitchen remodel in progress with new cabinets set and boxed appliances waiting

How long a kitchen remodel takes

Most kitchen remodels take 6 to 10 weeks, according to Angi kitchen timeline, updated July 8, 2026. Angi lists 1 to 2 weeks for minor cosmetic updates such as painting cabinets and a new backsplash. Replacing cabinets, countertops, and appliances takes 4 to 8 weeks, while an extensive remodel that moves or removes walls takes 8 to 12 weeks or more.

Kitchen remodels take 6 to 9 weeks on average, according to HomeGuide kitchen costs, December 31, 2025. HomeGuide says large kitchens and full remodels with structural changes, custom work, and rerouted plumbing and electrical often take 3 to 5 months when counting permits and materials. Custom cabinets can take 6 to 8 weeks to build, according to Angi kitchen costs, updated September 4, 2026.

How long a bathroom remodel takes

According to Angi bathroom timeline, updated July 9, 2026, a bathroom remodel typically takes 2 to 3 months overall. That includes at least 3 to 4 weeks of pre-construction, with about a week to apply for and get permits. For a small bathroom, Angi lists 3 to 4 weeks, or as little as 2 weeks when plumbing and wiring don’t move. The same page puts the average small bathroom at 23 days.

HomeGuide primary bathroom costs, dated October 26, 2025, gives a range of 2 to 8 weeks or more from demolition to completion for a primary bathroom. For a shower remodel, HomeGuide shower remodel costs, dated October 6, 2025, lists 3 to 7 days on average once the materials are ordered and delivered. Fixr tub-to-shower conversion, published January 23, 2025, lists as little as 2 days for a prefab shower the same size as the old tub and 1 to 2 weeks or longer for a custom conversion.

Additions and whole-house remodels

The Angi addition timeline, updated August 4, 2026, puts a small room or simple extension at 3 to 4 months from planning to completion. For a second story, a multi-room bump-out, or extensive remodeling, Angi gives a range of 6 months to a year or more. Angi lists 2 to 4 months for a garage conversion, 3 to 6 months for a room over a garage, 4 to 12 months for a bump-out addition, and 6 to 12 months for a second-story addition.

Angi’s home addition timeline page, updated August 4, 2026, breaks the work into phases. It puts planning and design at 1 to 3 months, pre-construction at 1 to 2 months, construction at 1 to 6 months, and finishing at 1 week to 3 months. The Angi home addition costs page, updated May 30, 2026, says to give yourself at least a month or 2 to plan, design, hire a contractor, and get permits. For a second story, Angi advises 3 to 4 months of preparation.

Permit review time in Austin

The City of Austin’s Residential Plan Review publishes review times starting July 1, 2026. Once the city accepts an application, it sends an invoice, and the review clock starts after that invoice is paid. Staff review plans in the order received, and the listed times are 5 business days for an interior remodel, 5 business days for a garage conversion, and 10 business days for new construction and additions. If plans are rejected, comments go back to the applicant, and each update submittal gets 7 business days of review.

The City of Austin’s Express Permits says most express permits are issued in 1 business day. After approval, permit issuance can take 1 to 2 days. The city’s Building Inspections says inspections are usually done 24 hours after they’re scheduled.

What slows a remodel down

Several things can stretch a remodel’s schedule:

  • Materials picked late, especially custom cabinets, which Angi (2026) says can take 6 to 8 weeks to build
  • Work that grows beyond what’s covered by an express permit, because the City of Austin requires a new application and fees and doesn’t reimburse the express fees
  • Comments from the City of Austin on a permit application, because each time you submit an update, the city gets another 7 business days to review it
  • Inspection timing, usually 24 hours after scheduling and sometimes 48 hours, according to the City of Austin
  • Extra City of Austin reviews for trees 19 inches or more in diameter, exterior changes to a house 45 years old or older, or a floodplain lot
  • Rot, an old leak, or wiring that has to be replaced when walls open
