Kitchen remodel cost per square foot
For a kitchen remodel, Angi, updated September 4, 2026, publishes a range of $75 to $250 per square foot. Angi also lists $7,500 to $25,000 for a 100-square-foot kitchen and $15,000 to $50,000 for a 200-square-foot kitchen. Angi says smaller kitchens cost more per square foot because fixed costs like labor and design fees are spread over less area.

What moves the price
Angi, updated September 4, 2026, names cabinets as the largest single cost driver in most kitchen remodels and publishes a range of $2,000 to $28,000 or more for them. Angi also publishes ranges of $1,800 to $4,400 for countertop installation, $500 to $1,500 for a backsplash, and $1,000 to $5,000 for a new floor.
Layout changes can bring other costs into the budget. Angi, updated September 4, 2026, publishes a range of $375 to $750 for relocating a gas line for the range. HomeGuide, December 31, 2025, publishes ranges of $500 to $2,000 for modifying or removing a wall if it isn’t load-bearing and $4,000 to $15,000 for a load-bearing wall. Fixr, updated January 27, 2026, publishes an added range of $2,750 to $6,000 for an architect or certified kitchen designer.
Refacing versus new cabinets
For a 100- to 200-square-foot kitchen, HomeGuide, December 31, 2025, publishes a range of $4,500 to $15,000 for replacing cabinets and $5,000 to $13,000 for refacing. Refacing in that range covers new doors, drawer fronts, and hardware, with veneer covering the boxes. The ranges overlap, so refacing doesn’t always cost less than replacing cabinets. Angi, updated September 4, 2026, says existing cabinets in good condition can be refinished or refaced to save money.
Sound boxes and a layout that stays make refacing workable. If the boxes have water damage or you want a new layout, we recommend new cabinets. We check box condition at the walkthrough for your kitchen remodeling project.
Permits and other line items
The City of Austin Development Services Department says painting, tiling, cabinets, countertops, and similar finish work are exempt from a building permit on its Work Exempt from Building Permits page. Its Express Permits page says an Express Permit covers a kitchen remodel when walls aren’t relocated or removed and plumbing fixtures aren’t relocated or added, though a separate permit for work in a specific trade may be required. The department’s Types of Permits page calls for an interior remodel building permit if you change structural components or add or relocate plumbing fixtures. You can read all the city’s remodel rules at Austin remodel permits.
Angi, updated September 4, 2026, publishes an average range of $460 to $2,770 for kitchen remodel building permits and a range of $90 to $250 a month for a portable storage unit to hold appliances you’re keeping. HomeGuide, December 31, 2025, publishes a demolition cost range of $500 to $2,500 for gutting a kitchen.
